How I Kept My Business Moving Forward In One Of The Busiest Seasons Of My Life
In the midst of moving house and setting up my new office it finally feels like I’m coming to the end of what has been a very big season of life, probably one of the busiest ever.
Between newborn mum life, 3 year old mum life, running a business, packing up and selling our house, moving towns, Christmas, school holidays, painting our new house, moving in, preparing Noah for pre school, and everything else in between. It’s been a lot!
So I had the thought last week that I could share how I’ve kept the business moving forward during this time.
Because there are some very key things that have made this possible – things you might not actually expect.
So let’s get into the episode!
Why I wanted to share this topic with you…
Something I talk about a lot is how you can design and build your business to support you in life.
While there will, of course, be trade offs and some give and take both ways, you don’t have to sacrifice your life to build your dream business AND you don’t have to put your business on hold when life lifes.
Everyone has seasons in both life and business that are more hectic than usual, but you don’t have to sacrifice one over the other in order to keep moving towards your goals.
You have to be intentional about it, create some habits that support you and put some things in place – systems and processes and support – in order to make it happen. But it IS possible.
And what better way to demonstrate this and share the HOW by giving you a behind the scenes look at what that has looked like for me and the actual things that have supported me to do all of the things over the last few months AND still keep my business moving forward.
So let’s dive in…
First things first – my clients are always my top priority and supporting them is my daily non negotiable.
So at the very least, I have time set aside each day to be in Voxer with my clients. Unless it’s a Wednesday which is when we also have our mastermind coaching call for the Spiritual Business Mistressmind each week. So on Wednesdays my minimum is Voxer and our coaching call.
I think it’s important to start by sharing that because there have been days over the last few months when all I did in the business was check in with clients. And I’ve had to be very clear around what my baseline non negotiables are in the business each day and each week to keep the business operational.
And I’ve had to double down on communicating what’s going on in the business with my husband, and be really clear and transparent when I’ve needed extra bits of time here and there, so that we could plan together for me to have that time.
There have also been times when I have been a bit stressed and overwhelmed with everything we’ve got going on and we’ve talked about what I need from him to help me look after myself and my nervous system and get back on top of my mindset.
So being clear on my baseline non negotiables and communication has been key.
And I think something else that’s also important to note at the outset is that navigating life and business in seasons like this takes work and being really intentional about it – it isn’t easy.
That’s not to say that it has been this really hard slog the whole time but it hasn’t been easy. If it was, then I wouldn’t be recording a podcast episode about it.
And I want you to know that I certainly didn’t have it all together all of the time.
Yes, there were things that meant I did still move the business forward, and I’m going to share those with you in this episode. But there were definitely moments when things were feeling really sticky for me.
You know, there were moments when I didn’t communicate with Matt or with Noah in the way that I wanted to, there were moments when I got frustrated with the unpredictability and lack of sleep that comes with having a newborn and being out of routine because we weren’t in our own house anymore.
I definitely had more than one moment where I felt stretched really thin, pulled in all directions and felt like I wasn’t doing any of it particularly well.
Which leads me to the first element I want to share with you today that helped me keep the business moving forward during this time.
1: Mindset is everything.
This season has required me to be really on top of my mindset and negative mind chatter.
To approach this busy season fully trusting in myself and my ability to hold it all. It would have been very easy to look at what was ahead of us, at the time with the added uncertainty of how long we were going to be between houses, and everything we had to do between point A and point B, and get stressed just at the thought of it.
But that kind of future tripping is so unhelpful. So going in with the mindset of, “I’ve got this, I’ve moved through big seasons before, I can do it again”.
I’ve also been called more than ever to be really gentle with myself and challenge any of those negative thoughts that come up when they inevitably do, especially during seasons like this.
When things feel harder or more out of your comfort zone, the ego loves to come out to play.
So it was important to not make myself wrong for feeling stretched in motherhood and in the business.
Not make myself wrong for outsourcing more than ever before, for asking my team to step in on days and weeks when I literally had no capacity beyond client support. Not make myself wrong for taking things off my plate completely, for rescheduling non-urgent tasks in Asana again and again and sometimes again.
You know that I’m a big believer in the importance of mindset as a business owner, full stop - but it was even more important during this time because the nature of being stretched in this way capacity-wise means that the mindset chatter gets louder. So therefore you have to be more on top of it in order to keep moving forward.
Mindset is everything.
2: Planning conversations with my coach every week.
Coming into 2023, I already had the high level plan for what the year was going to look like in terms of program dates and launch dates, but what I didn’t have was the detail of what it would look like.
For example, I knew I would be launching the Spiritual Business Academy in February but I didn’t know what pre-launch would look like, I didn’t know what my launch event would be, I didn’t have any of the detail to colour in the high level plan.
So something I made sure I was doing each week was progressing those plans with my coach.
We have weekly group calls and daily messaging support in the mastermind I’m a part of, so utilising that support, I was able to keep my planning moving forward through regular conversations with her.
These conversations were vital for me keeping these plans moving forward. Always thinking ahead, always planning the next step, keeping everything on track so I didn’t come to the end of this busy season with none of those decisions made.
As the leader of your business, this kind of thinking is key. Having the ability to be present in your business right now for your clients and current projects AND thinking and planning ahead for the next thing.
For me, having a coach to support me with this in an ongoing way has been game-changing. I’ve been working with my coach now for over 3 years and I really see her as a partner who walks alongside me in this journey to help me strategise, make decisions, move through any mindset stuff and keep me moving towards my goals.
And it’s the same way I like to work with my own clients. In it for the long haul, going deeper in that relationship for that long term growth and sustainability.
3: Communicating with my team.
I have delegated and leaned on my team for support during this season more than ever before.
And communication with them was key to making this possible. Once I had made key decisions around what our plans were, I then communicated the vision with them, talked them through the timeline and then delegated tasks.
I was also really clear about what I had going on each week personally and what they could expect from me availability wise.
My aim is to not bottleneck anything. My team, which is made up of one VA and one content manager (shout out to Jilanne and Tahryn!), are super efficient and I don’t want to be the one holding the process up so I always try to respond as soon as I can and give them everything they need upfront so they don’t have to continually ask me for more info and run the risk of holding up the process.
I also try to give them as much lead time as possible - which doesn’t always happen. But it’s always my intent. I don’t like doing things at the last minute but if we do have a quick turnaround on things, I always chat it through with them both to make sure our timeline is possible, which it usually is, even when it’s tight.
So communicating with my team and leaning on their support more than ever before was what made it possible to keep progressing the business forward during this time.
If you’ve been looking at what I’m doing in the business and wondering how the heck I’ve been able to “do it all” while moving house and towns with a 3 year old and a newborn - the answer is, I haven’t done it alone. This is not a one woman show over here. Support is key.
Finally…
4: Being really organised and planned ahead of time.
Organisation and planning is key. I can’t stress this enough. Knowing that this busy season was coming meant that I could get super organised with my planning.
This is really the only way that I’ve been able to keep showing up and creating content and making sales over the last few months. I had a plan and I was organised AF. I wasn’t flying blind.
It meant that when I did find myself with a pocket of time to do some work, I didn’t waste any time trying to work out what I needed to do. I’d already decided what that was because it was planned. I could just hit the ground running.
This is something that I’ve learned to do more and more as a mama in business. Being organised is super important when you’re busy and only have small pockets of time to work in, like naptimes.
What you don’t want to be doing every time you sit down to work is thinking through everything on your to-do list and all of the possible tasks you could be doing before deciding what you’re actually going to do. You just simply don’t have time to be doing that each time. It’s not efficient and it’s not going to move your business forward.
So being organised and planned is key. A little bit of structure goes a long way when it comes to supporting your flow.
So that’s how I’ve kept my business moving forward in what has been one of the busiest seasons of my life…
Prioritising my mindset.
Planning conversations with my coach every week.
Communicating with my team.
Being really organised and planned ahead of time.
I’m coming out of this super busy season now, finally landing here in our new house in our new town and I’m really looking forward to feeling more settled and grounded now.
