How I Scaled My Business In My First Year Of Being A Mama

To mark the first official episode of Feminine Fire I wanted to share something a little special…

But also a little stretchy…

While I’m a big advocate for sharing your wins and celebrating your wins, it can still feel a little uncomfortable to do so.

But that’s why it’s even more important to do it...right?

So that’s why today’s episode is all about How I Scaled My Business in My First Year of Being a Mama

I’m sharing this because I had my biggest year in business in the 12 months after my son Noah was born

and...

I can’t believe I’m about to share this number with you…

But now, only 18 months later, I’m looking at bringing in $250,000 into the business in sales this year. That is my goal for 2021 and it honestly feels so surreal to share because prior to becoming a mum, that seemed SO far out of reach.

In fact it still feels surreal that my business grew so much in that first 12 months of Noah’s life because it was not something I ever expected.

In fact, I had very little expectations of what life and business would look like as a new mama… I’d obviously never been responsible for a small human before, it was a whole new world and I had no expectations.

But while I didn’t know what my business would look like as a new mum... scaling my business in that first year ALSO wasn’t an accident.

I made some very intentional decisions.

So I’m going to share with you what those decisions were that helped me to scale my business in my first year of being a Mama.

Why I’m Sharing This With You...

I want you to know that this isn’t only relevant for mums or beautiful mamas to be - this will be relevant to you no matter what season of life or business you’re in right now.

Because essentially, this is about working smarter, not harder. And making incredible use of your time. Because when you become a mum, your time suddenly becomes very limited.

It can be very easy to feel like growing and building and scaling your business isn’t possible, but I’m here to tell you that it is!

I’m living proof of that.

I served MORE clients, I made MORE money and I was working a LOT less.

And what that looked like for me personally time-wise was… I went from working full-time in my business 5 days a week before Noah was born... to working 1 day a week and 1-2 nights depending on what programs I had running at the time.

It was equal to about 10-12 hours each week…. And using that time only, I scaled my business.

And you can do it too. Whether you’re a new mama or not - whether you’ve got 10 hours or 40 hours a week. You can scale your business - even if it feels out of reach at the moment.

So my aim is that by sharing with you how I did it, that it’ll support you on your journey to scaling your spiritual business - whether you’re aiming for your first six figure year or you’re looking at multi-six figures or even seven figures.

It wasn’t an accident that I grew my business in the way that I did.

I made some very intentional decisions after Noah was born that made it possible for me and today I want to share 3 of those decisions with you.

These are the three decisions that I consider to be the MOST crucial to my success – so let’s dive in!

Decision #1 - The Mindset Shift

I decided that there were no more excuses. I was ALL IN on my business.

This relates to what I was talking about before. It can be very easy as a new mum to use your lack of time as an excuse.

“I can’t build my business because I don’t have the time.”

And I’m not saying that business is not going to change when you become a new mum...because it 100% will!

Our businesses shift and change with us as we move through different seasons in our life. Right now, my business looks this way, because I’m a mum, because I have limited time. And that’s an incredible thing to have the freedom to shift and change like that.

But I’ve only been able to make those changes and still grow my business because I decided there were no more excuses.

And when I made that decision - I could no longer use my limited amount of time as an excuse.

My goal was to scale and grow and build my business, and I had to find a way to do that in my limited time. There were no more excuses to not do it – that was my goal and I had to find a way.

In spiritual business, excuses come in many shapes and sizes. For me it was my lack of time. But as business owners, as CEOs there is always an excuse we can find to not do something.

I see this with my clients all the time...and I’ve definitely done this myself!

Excuses like...

  • I can’t invest in support, because I haven’t made enough money in my business yet.

  • I can’t show up on video because I don’t know how to use the tech or I don’t like hearing how my voice sounds on video.

  • I could never do that because I’m too busy doing all the things.

  • I can’t outsource that task because no one will ever do it as well as me.

All of these are excuses that business owners use to hold themselves back.

But when you decide that there are no more excuses, you find a way to make the things that you want... happen.

If you want to invest in a coach because you know it’ll skyrocket your growth – you find a way to make it happen.

If you want to show up on video because you know it’ll build a relationship with your audience – you find a way to make it happen.

If you want to make more money in your business – you find a way to make it happen.

No more excuses.

When I decided there were no more excuses, that’s when I finally started to see some real growth in my business.

So I’d encourage you to take some time to consider where you might be making excuses in your business. Where are you holding yourself back for whatever reason? What would you do differently if you decided there were no more excuses?

Decision #2 - Creating A Scalable Business Model

Prior to Noah’s birth, I was selling candles, running workshops & women’s circles, and offering 1:1 coaching sessions.

But I was just dabbling a bit here and there. I hadn’t committed fully to any sort of business model. And ultimately, what really changed the game for me was when I went all in on creating a scalable business model.

Originally I’d planned to return to 1:1 coaching once Noah was born, but when I made the decision and commitment to focus on creating a scalable business model, I decided to NOT return to 1:1 coaching.

This all came down to that time factor. I had a lot less time in my business, I was going to hit an income ceiling pretty quickly if that was the only way to work with me.

So I made the decision to move to a 1:many program model. That meant creating new offers, finding new ways of working and calling in new types of support.

But moving to a 1:many model meant that my business was scaleable. And deciding to focus on creating a scalable business model, and not return to 1:1 coaching in this season of my life and business, was absolutely essential to my success.

I know it sounds obvious that creating a scalable model is essential to scaling your business...But often what I see happen is business owners set a goal to scale their business, without actually making the shifts and changes necessary in their business model. So making the decision to do that consciously was important.

And if this is a space you’re currently playing in, I’m excited to share that I have a free challenge on this exact topic coming up - more on that soon!

So if you’re looking to scale your business consider if you have a business model that supports that.

Decision #3 - Investing In Support For My Business

The final decision I made was to invest in support for my business.

I can’t stress how significant this was for me.

It’s something that I see so many business owners, so many of my clients putting off – and something that I personally put off for the first 3 years of my business.

I’m 100% certain that if I’d invested in this support earlier, my business would’ve grown and scaled a lot sooner.

Now when I’m talking about support – there are two different types I’m talking about…

  1. Support that is going to give you more TIME to focus on the things that you need to focus on in your business – which includes outsourcing and hiring a team.

  2. Support that is going to ACCELERATE your business growth - things like investing in a business coach.

So let’s first talk about the support that is going to give you more TIME in your business.

Noah was about 8 months old when I hired my first team member to take some of those admin tasks off my plate. And now the wonderful Tahryn from the Social Bolt has been working with me for almost a year AND it has made everything in my business a million times easier.

Often those tasks that take us a stupid amount of time to do (because they’re not in our wheelhouse, a professional in that space can do it SO much faster. You could spend hours on one little task like working out how to add a button to your website OR you could pay someone else to do it in way less time. This leaves you free to spend your time on things that actually grow your business and your income.

Now you might not be in the position to hire someone on an ongoing basis yet. So that might look like outsourcing some specific one-off tasks in your business OR it might even look like outsourcing and getting additional support in the home.

For example, Matt and I have someone who cleans our house. My mum actually bought us 3 months of house cleaning as a baby shower gift (best gift ever by the way!). Once those first 3 months were up, we decided to continue on ourselves.

Because having that support at home means that I don’t spend the limited time that I do have, on cleaning my house. I can use that time for my business instead.

For you that might look like a cleaner, or a gardener, or childcare (which is something we’ve just invested in this year too ). But whatever it looks like, it's support that will give you more TIME to focus on the things that you need to focus on in your business.

The second is – investing in support that is going to ACCELERATE your business growth.

I’m talking about investing in a business coach. I’m obviously a big advocate for this, but it’s only been fairly recently that I’ve been working with a business coach in an ongoing way.

Prior to Noah’s birth, I’d had sessions here and there with a business coach. But when Noah was just 10 weeks old, I joined a high level 6 month mastermind. It was the biggest investment I had ever made in my business and it was scary as hell, to say the least.

I had a 10 week old baby, I was on maternity leave with very little income coming in at the time. But I made the decision to invest in a business coach and a mastermind program because I knew that it was going to accelerate my business growth.

And I was NOT wrong. Making that investment is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my business – and now I don’t see a time when I won’t have a business coach.

Investing in support for my business - and having that support squad at all sides - has been absolutely game changing. I would definitely not be where I am today without having made that investment and I cannot recommend it enough.

So the question to ask yourself here is - what support do you need right now that will give you back more TIME to focus on the things you need to focus on in your business...and what support do you need that will accelerate your business growth?

Because investing in support for your business is one of the best things you can do when you’re wanting to scale.

~

So there you have it! Those are the 3 very intentional decisions I made that allowed me to scale my business, make more money and support more clients, in my first year of being a mum.

And I think the real key here… is that word intentional. Making really intentional decisions and being intentional in the way you do everything in your business. You literally can’t go wrong.
