My Biggest Mindset Lessons After 8 Years In Business

I won’t lie, today’s episode of the Feminine Fire Podcast feels a little more vulnerable, a little more personal…

BUT every time I reflect on my business journey I’m reminded just how important mindset is.

After 8 years, I can hand on heart say that it’s true when they say that business is one of the biggest personal growth journeys you’ll ever go on. Because it has been a journey!

So I want to share my biggest mindset lessons from my 8 years in business with the intention that this supports and sparks something within you…

Especially if you’re in the weeds or feeling a bit wobbly or in the messy middle right now.

And even if you’re feeling pretty solid mindset-wise, I know there will still be some nuggets of wisdom for you too.

Let’s dive in.

1: Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff

When I first started out in business, I would stress and deliberate over every little decision.

Everything felt so BIG and important, and like I had to get everything “right” straight out the gate. I wanted everything perfect and all my ducks in a row before I did anything, and I would stress over things that really didn’t matter.

But as I went on I realised more and more that so many of those things just don’t matter. Your business and your offers will always evolve. You will never arrive at a totally finished business, there’s always something else that you’re working on. There’s always the next evolution or iteration. And if you’re trying to get everything perfect or as close to perfect as you can get, you’re only going to slow yourself down.

After 8 years in the game I just don't worry about any of the shit that doesn't matter anymore.

You can always change something if it’s not working or if it’s no longer aligned. That’s one of the gifts of being a business owner, if things don’t work out, you get to play again. If you want to change something, you get to. There’s no rules. YOU make the rules. And there’s no point sweating the small stuff and getting hung up on that, because trust me, in 8 years time, it's not going to matter.

2: Trust In Your Own Vision

I’ve learnt to really trust in my own vision and my own inner guidance to make decisions. Because no one else is YOU, no one else is running YOUR business and the fact is, you’re never going to please everyone.

There will always be people with different opinions. There will be people, for example, that will think $30 for a handmade essential oil soy wax candle is expensive and “oh my goodness how dare you charge that much money” and others who will think it’s super affordable and tell you “oh wow Bec what are you doing, you could charge way more for these”. I have literally had both of those conversations with people, back in the days when I made and sold candles.

The best thing you can do is not let all that outside noise distract you. Stay in your lane. Focus on connecting to yourself, connecting to the soul of your business. And staying true to you. Really anchoring into your own truth. Because that’s ultimately what’s going to serve you and your people and your business best in the end.

3: Don’t Make Problems Where There Aren’t Any

Because shit happens in business all the time.

Tech fails…

You schedule an email incorrectly…

Payments fail...

Things don’t go to plan...

People will reach out and then ghost you.

Once upon a time some of these things would keep me up at night. I’d worry that maybe I’d done something wrong or that I could’ve done things differently or that I should’ve known better…

BUT to be honest, not a lot phases me anymore – I don't make myself wrong for things not working out the way I expected them to or for things outside of my control.

Of course, if it's an error on our part or we've made a mistake it's important to rectify that and learn from those mistakes, acknowledge them and make changes accordingly.

But most of the time, the mistakes we’re talking about, the experiences we’re talking about, they are just not a big deal. For the most part, they are not going to impact your business in any significant way. So let’s not make it into a bigger problem than it needs to be.

Things don’t always go to plan, and it often doesn’t matter.

And when that happens, you might feel disappointed – and that’s okay. You’re allowed to feel your feelings. You’re allowed to feel disappointed when things don’t work out in the way you expected. But you also can’t stay in that place for too long.

I know for me, I might allow myself to have a pity party for 5 minutes if I need it, let my inner child throw a bit of a tantrum, but then I buck up. Because it’s usually not that big a deal. And if there is an actual problem that needs solving, it’s your job to solve it. The good news is that there’s always a solution to every problem. So allow yourself to feel those feelings and then let them go so you can move forward.

As business owners, we are problem solving all the time anyway. We don’t need to create more problems for ourselves unnecessarily.

4: Assume The Best

What if instead of assuming the worst, we actually assume the BEST.

For example, if someone doesn’t get back to you after you’ve sent them a message, let’s not make it mean MORE than what it does.

Are they ghosting you? Or did they just get interrupted by their kids when they went to respond?

Assuming the best is something that I actively practice – because you honestly just don’t know.

Whenever I feel those worst assumptions creep in, I will remind myself of the information I’ve got right now: This person reached out about this offer. I’ve sent them the details and I haven’t heard back.

That’s the only information I’ve got. Are they ghosting me? Maybe? But also, maybe not? Let’s assume the best and see what happens.

I’ve had my worst assumptions proven wrong so many times that I now know not to do it. Whether that’s assuming that it’s going to be a “no” after a sales call and then that person turns around and pays in full out of the blue. Or assuming that a client won’t re-sign for the next round, but then jumps in without me asking.

Instead of assuming the worst, assume the best. People will surprise you. The universe will surprise you. So be open to that.

5: Actively Seek The Positive

We are so geared for negative bias that our brain will always focus on the negative. It will focus on that ONE criticism or ONE piece of negative feedback amongst the hundreds of glowing testimonials. Or it will continually remind you of that ONE mistake that actually didn’t matter.

I am someone who used to be a chronic overthinker. I would lay awake for hours at night in bed mulling over situations and how I could have done something differently or thinking about what I could have said but didn’t, and it was exhausting.

I can gratefully say that I’ve done a lot of work on that over the years and I’ve let a lot of that shit go now. And I’ve done that by actively focusing on the positive.

Actively looking for it and training my brain to do so. And if I ever do get a bit wobbly in that, I have a folder of screenshots in my phone with ALL the beautiful messages I’ve received from clients – their wins, their celebrations, their kind words. I look at those and remember, “oh yeah, I am bloody good at what I do, see brain, look at all this evidence I have here. We can do this.”

6: Dig Deep To Find Grit & Determination

If there’s one thing I have learnt in the past 8 years, it’s that you WILL be stretched and challenged as a business owner. You will have THE most difficult conversations. You will have to push outside your comfort zone. Learn new skills. Do new things. Adapt to changes in the market. Continue to evolve your business.

Being a business owner is not easy. This is not the easy path to take. It takes grit and it takes determination. And if you’re not up for the personal growth journey alongside the business journey, then I probably wouldn’t recommend this for you.

I have had conversations with so many women in business over the years, whether they’re clients or peers, and there’s almost this running joke of, “so who’s looked for a real job this week?”

I’ve been on more than a few group calls where people have been like, “oh my goodness, this week has been so hard, I even found myself scrolling job ads looking for a new job.”

And you might have had those moments in business too where that thought might pop up, “oh wouldn’t it be nice to just have a job where you rock up, do the hours and go home with a paycheck, like doesn’t that just sound so nice and easy.”

BUT then you remember WHY you’re running this business in the first place.

You’re not in business because it's easy. You’re in business because you have a purpose and a mission and a vision for what you want to do here. You have magic and medicine to share. And you want the freedom and the lifestyle, you want to choose your own hours and do the work that you really love. All of THAT wins out over easy.

But it does require grit and determination. To continue to show up and do hard things and keep going, no matter what challenges are thrown up at you.

But the good news is that you CAN do hard things. Business will show you that you can. Being in business will stretch you beyond what you thought possible and give you many opportunities to truly surprise yourself with what you’re capable of. It’s SUCH a gift of being in business. There’s so much learning and growth that happens because you’ve gotta dig deep to find that grit.
