Been In Business A While But Still Not Making Decent Cash? Listen To This
Let’s talk about bringing in the money, honey.
Something I see all the time is spiritual business owners who’ve been in business a while, but are still not making the kind of money they desire.
You might have a 5k month here and maybe even a 10k month there, but it’s not consistent or predictable.
So it’s not surprising you feel frustrated, confused and like you “should” be way further along than you are.
Sometimes you even feel like you’re failing at this whole business thing, and find yourself questioning whether you should even be doing this at all, looking at job ads thinking – “maybe I should just get a ‘real’ job.”
So if you’ve been in biz a while but you’re still not making decent cash – this episode of the Feminine Fire Podcast is for you.
I’ll take you through the 7 biggest reasons why you might not be making decent cash in your business right now and what to do about it.
As always my aim is to make these episodes SUPER practical for you – so grab a pen and paper, listen in and take note of what you need to action to start bringing in the moolah!
Reason #1 – You’re hiding behind information-based content
Yes, sharing value is great! Please keep doing that!
But people need to connect with YOU before they’ll feel comfortable and confident investing in your offers and services.
They need to know why YOU are the person to solve their problem.
If you’re only sharing information-based content, like “top 5 tips for this…” or “3 steps to that…” – you need to step out from behind those educational pieces, show your beautiful face and start sharing why YOU are the person to buy from.
What sets you apart?
What makes you unique?
Why are YOU someone worth listening to and buying from?
To give you some examples:
This can look like sharing personal stories that allow your people to get to know you and that showcase your expertise and experience at the same time.
Or sharing client case studies and testimonials that demonstrate the transformation you provide your clients.
We want people to think of YOU when they think of your area of expertise. So let’s give them something to think about and start showing up as the authority that you are.
Reason #2 – You lack clarity on your ideal client and exactly how you help them
How can you serve your people really well if you don’t know what they want and need?
If you want to craft epic offerings that deeply serve and support your clients – you need to know who they are, what they need & desire, and how YOU help them.
What’s the problem that you solve?
This is foundational stuff that you will continue to come back to time and time again on your business journey. Who are your ideal clients? And how do YOU help them?
If you’re not super clear on this, the action step here is to make it a priority to get to know your ideal clients really well – you can do that through:
market research
polling your audience
having conversations in the DMs
reflecting on your conversations with clients
Client conversations are a goldmine for gaining more clarity and a deeper understanding of what your people want and need.
What are the questions you’re asked all the time?
What are the common threads of people’s experience that you see regularly?
What is something you support your clients with consistently?
Use this information to keep refining your offerings and your messaging so that you’re serving your people really well and speaking directly to their needs and desires in your content.
Reason #3 – You’re focusing on inclusions rather than the transformation in your messaging
If you’re leading with the inclusions or the features of an offer – then you’re missing the point.
People need to know what’s in it for them. What do they get out of it? What is the result or the outcome?
They are far more interested in the transformation you can support them with, than the number of sessions that are included.
People are buying the transformation, so you need to be selling the transformation.
This is why knowing your ideal client and their needs & desires are so important. You need to ensure that the transformation you’re selling is something they want and that you’re speaking about it in a way that’s desirable.
So start speaking to the desired outcomes and transformation that you provide your clients. How does your offer give your clients what they need and want? Lead with that first and foremost, and then tell them about the inclusions.
Reason #4 – You’re simply not selling enough
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – you can’t just talk about your offer once (or even twice) and expect it to sell.
You need to be showing up and selling consistently.
If you’re not selling enough – you need to work out what it is that’s holding you back and deal with it ASAP. This needs to be a priority because you need to be selling in order to make money.
So do some self reflection and be really honest with yourself – what’s holding you back from selling?
Do you have a fear of selling?
Are you worried people will think you’re too “sales-y”?
Do you not know how to talk about your offers in a way that feels authentic and natural?
Does the idea of selling just feel ick?
Whatever it is, you need to change your relationship to sales.
There are 2 reframes that I know I found helpful and so many of my clients too:
To see selling as serving
To see asking for the sale as an invitation.
And know that sales is a skill you can learn.
It’s possible to learn how to sell soulfully and do it well. Make it a priority to get really good at soulful sales, and get out there and start selling more.
Reason #5 – You’re confused or unclear about where to focus your energy
Or you’re just not focusing on the things that are actually going to move the needle forward in your business.
It can be so easy to get bogged down in busy work, where it feels like you’re being productive because you’re doing things.
But are you doing things that are actually going to bring in cash? Or are you procrasti-working?
Doing things like mucking around with designs in Canva for hours on end or updating your website and Instagram bio for the millionth time this year – all while avoiding those actual money making tasks like sending an invoice or following up on leads?
Sometimes it might be as obvious as avoiding those specific money making tasks on your to-do list.
Other times it’s less obvious, and you’re just downright confused and unsure where you should be focusing your efforts.
Is it marketing? Is it sales? Is it auditing your offers? Is it your messaging?
And I’d be lying if I said I could give you a clear answer on a podcast like this. There’s no one size fits all solution here and I’d need more information about you and your business before I could say: “this is what I recommend.”
What I do know is that if you’re unclear on your strategy and not sure what your best next steps are – you need to rectify that.
You need to get clear on your strategy and start executing from that place. Rather than just hoping for the best!
My biggest recommendation here is to get support.
Someone who can help you craft a tailored personalised strategy for you and your business focused on bringing in cash and building your business sustainably.
Reason #6 You’re trying to figure it all out on your own
The path of online business can be a lonely one.
And when you’re trying to figure it all out on your own, piecing together all the free advice on the internet, you’ll likely move wayyyy more slowly than you’d like to be moving and you’ll end up feeling frustrated and resentful, or you’ll be so overworked and exhausted that you’ll be heading straight for burnout city, without any results to show for it.
The solution here? Get a coach in your corner, and plug into a community.
This is why I love creating group programs and mastermind experiences – because you get the best of both these worlds. The support of a coach AND the community of like-minded, like-hearted business owners who get it.
This is particularly important if you don’t have other people in your life who are business owners. You need people who understand and get it. Some of my best biz besties are friends that I’ve made through group coaching and mastermind experiences.
You don’t have to do it alone!
Find a coach you resonate with and plug into a community – this will not only accelerate your growth but make the whole journey of entrepreneurship a much more enjoyable one!
Reason #7 You’re replicating other people’s business models and strategies
I know how easy it can be to get distracted by what other people are doing.
When you see something that seems to be working for someone else and they seem to be enjoying what they’re doing and how they’re doing it, it can be very tempting, especially if you’re not clear on your own strategy, to try it on for yourself.
But what works for them may not work for you. In fact, it often doesn’t because it hasn’t been designed or crafted with you in mind. You, with your own unique strengths, values and set of circumstances, you need a business model and a strategy that is tailored and personalised to you.
Someone else’s strategy won’t be a good fit for you because you’re not them.
Your strategy needs to take into account things like your strengths, your values, your point of difference, your personality and the season of life and business you’re in.
So no more looking out there at what everyone else is doing. Get really focused on what is going to work for YOU.
Amazing! So let’s do a quick recap here for you on the 7 biggest reasons why you might not be making cash right now and what you can do about it.
